Following his formal art education Paul struck out to study the art of marble carving under the tutelage of some of the worlds finest. From Italy's famous Carrera quarries, to Berlin, then to Rajasthan to master traditional Indian techniques and finally honing his craft as an assistant to Anish Kapoor.
His pieces are a combination of sensuous abstract figures and rolls of cloth, carved exquisitely from the finest marble. Paul has shown his work at a number of major galleries in London, including the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, as well as galleries and sculpture gardens throughout the UK. He has gained a number of prestigious awards and commissions, among them the Henry Moore Award (1991) and the Lady Carrington Sculpture Garden commission (1991 and 1996).
His ability to select stone, knowledge borne through decades of emersion, is almost as key to his work as his carving skill. Seams of seemingly impossible colours weave through the rich tones of onyx or marble, these inform the lines and curves of the finished piece.
We are able to offer our clients overnight trips to visit Paul's selected quarries with him to help select the stone for their own piece, spend an overnight stay in local luxurious accommodation where you can learn more about the art of working with marble, then have Paul carve a completely unique piece based on your specific requirements. If this sounds like your idea of heaven do feel free to enquire.
